Answer: National Sleep Awareness Week - What am I?

Good morning everyone! We had a lot of correct answers both on Facebook and Twitter for our “What am I?” question of the day. The correct answer is: Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea is a common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep.  

Breathing pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes. They often occur five to 30 times, or more an hour. Typically, normal breathing then starts again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound.  

Sleep Apnea is usually a chronic (ongoing) condition that disrupts your sleep. You often move out of deep sleep and into light sleep when your breathing pauses or becomes shallow.  

This results in poor sleep quality that makes you tired during the day. Sleep Apnea is one of the leading causes of excessive daytime sleepiness.

"What am I? 2/28/12

Good morning everyone, let’s see if you can answer the latest “What am I?”

I am an inflammation of the main air passages to the lungs. I may be short-lived (acute) or chronic, meaning that I can last a long time. I first affect your nose, sinuses, and throat and then spread to the lungs.

My symptoms include: chest discomfort, cough that produces mucus, fatigue, fever, shortness of breath and wheezing.

What am I?

Welcome back everyone. We know it may be early for a brain teaser, but grab some tea and see if you can answer the latest “What am I?”

I am a condition in which the stomach contents (food or liquid) leak backwards from the stomach into the esophagus. This action causes irritation to the esophagus, which can result in heartburn, nausea, coughing and difficulty swallowing. What am I?

    American Red Cross Blood Drive

    The American Red Cross of Greater Columbus will have its blood drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 15 at the COPC Central Business Office parking lot located at 570 Polaris Parkway. Those who donate will receive two coupons, one for a free appetizer at Mimi’s Cafe, and the other for a free coupon at Tim Horton’s. There will also be a drawing for a year’s worth of free groceries from Kroger.

    How Twitter got me to run in the snow

    Sunday morning I rolled out of bed freezing and half awake. It was 8 a.m., I made a quick breakfast and checked the Central Ohio Primary Care social media pages (Facebook and Twitter). I know a lot of the people that follow are physically fit and active, but I didn’t know how dedicated a few actually were when it came to having a workout routine and sticking with it.

     

    A few of our followers were talking about running 3-5 miles that morning. Yes, that’s a lot of miles but what struck me, was that it was 10 degrees outside! How could they possibly function?

    After an hour or so, I set out to find out myself. After putting on four layers of clothes a stocking cap, gloves and face protection, I was ready to run. By this time it was 9:30 a.m. and a sweltering 18 degrees outside. I did a few stretches and had second thoughts of actually going through with it. I know I may be making this out to be more than it really is, but I am not a runner.

    The last time I ran, was on September 5th, for the Central Ohio Primary Care Foundation’s “Run 4 the Health of It.” Even then, my goal was to finish without walking.

     

    That day was a little different. Sure it was cool and windy out, but it was still 75 degrees. This time it was very cold and a little windy. My fiancée, Jenny, thought I was nuts for attempting the run. My goal was to run a mile and a half and walk back home.

    When I first started my run, the only thing running through my head was, “Watch out for ice and don’t fall.” I had a nice steady pace going and luckily I didn’t fall. Half way through the run, my face and lungs were frozen. The funny thing was, I didn’t stop and by the end, noticed that I was actually doing pretty well considering I took a few months off.

     

    After finishing the run, I was exhausted but made sure I stretched before continuing the walk home. The walk back wasn’t bad either. Despite the cold, I had a smile on my face. I was glad that I had accomplished something new.

    I can’t say it was all fun and games. The rest of the day I was exhausted and my legs are still pretty sore. But, if I hadn’t looked at the Central Ohio Primary Care Twitter feed yesterday, it is likely I would not have had the motivation to run or be active. It’s funny what can be motivating.

     

    Each week, it is my plan to do something new with a healthy twist to it and document it here. It could simply be trying a new health shake or going to a yoga class. I will continue to look on Facebook and Twitter for ideas. It would be great to have your ideas and comments as well on our health blog.

    "What am I?" Answer

    We’re here with the answer to yesterday’s “What am I?” As usual, we had a lot of great guesses and a majority of your submitted answers were correct.

    Gout is a kind of arthritis that occurs when uric acid builds up in blood and causes joint inflammation.

    Gout symptoms usually occur in one or a few joints. The big toe, knee, or ankle joints are most often affected. Pain can start suddenly, often during the night, and is often described as throbbing, crushing, or excruciating. The attack may go away in a few days, but may return from time to time. Additional attacks often last longer.

    Some diet and lifestyle changes, like avoiding alcohol, limiting meat consumption and fatty foods, may help prevent attacks.

    COPCPF announces its “Crystal Apple” sponsorship

    The Central Ohio Primary Care Physicians Foundation is pleased to announce its “Crystal Apple” sponsorship of the Children’s Hunger Alliance 2012 Menu of Hope Luncheon.

    Jane Pauley will be the keynote speaker of the 17th annual luncheon which will take place February 21 at the Hyatt Regency Columbus.

    The sponsorship enables Children’s Hunger Alliance to continue building partnerships with schools, community and faith-based organizations. It also enables home-based child care and after school providers to give more than 400,000 children the food they need to be well nourished, healthy and thrive.

    In 2011, the event netted nearly $230,000. Over the past 16 years, the Menu of Hope Luncheon has raised an estimated $4 million.
